Is your motorcycle "stuttering" and consuming too much fuel? It could be due to engine "cholesterol" (carbon buildup).
Share
Imagine your motorcycle engine is like a human heart. The fuel is the blood, and the arteries are the valves and combustion chambers. Over time, if the fuel is poor (low-quality gasoline) and the lifestyle is sedentary (short trips where the engine doesn't warm up), the arteries begin to clog.
This blockage is called carbonization .

It's a layer of hard carbon that accumulates on the piston head, valves, and cylinder head. The result? Your motorcycle loses power, consumes more fuel, and can even suffer serious damage if left untreated.
But how do you clean that up? There are 3 levels of treatment, from the simplest to the most invasive.
Symptoms: How to tell if your engine is "dirty"?
Before rushing to the mechanic, pay attention to these signs:
-
Lack of Power: The motorcycle feels "stuck," especially on inclines or when overtaking.
-
Unstable idle: The engine hesitates or stalls when you stop at a traffic light.
-
High Fuel Consumption: You are using more gasoline to travel the same distance.
-
Dark Smoke: Visible signs in the exhaust.
-
"Knocking" (Pre-ignition): A metallic noise (like a ticking sound ) when you accelerate hard, caused by hot carbon detonating the gasoline prematurely.
Level 1: Prevention and Light Cleaning (Additives)
Ideal for: Preventive maintenance or very early stages of use.
The cheapest and easiest solution is to use fuel additives (detergents/dispersants). These products mix in the tank and help dissolve carbon deposits while you drive.
-
How to do it: You buy a well-known brand additive (e.g., Motul, Liqui Moly), add it to an almost empty tank, and fill up with quality gasoline (preferably premium or SC98).
-
The "Italian Tune-up": An old technique that consists of riding the motorcycle at higher RPMs (with the engine very hot!) for a few kilometers. The extra heat and gas flow help to "blow" some of the carbon buildup out.
Level 2: Hydrogen Decarbonization (The "Detox")
Ideal for: Motorcycles that are a few years old, used intensively in urban areas, and with moderate symptoms.
This is the modern method that many workshops already offer. A machine injects a mixture of oxyhydrogen gas (HHO) into the motorcycle's air intake while it is running.
-
Advantage: Hydrogen increases the combustion temperature in a controlled manner, "burning" and breaking down internal carbon deposits without needing to open the engine.
-
Cost: Generally between €70 and €150, depending on the workshop. It's quick, effective, and non-invasive.
Level 3: Mechanical Cleaning (The "Surgery")
Ideal for: Severe cases where the motorcycle has compression failure or the valves are not sealing.
When there's so much carbon buildup that the valves no longer close properly (loss of compression), no fluid will solve the problem. You have to open them.
-
The Process: The mechanic disassembles the cylinder head and physically scrapes the carbon from the valves and piston, leaving everything shining like new.
-
Cons: It's expensive due to being labor-intensive.
Pro Tip: Clean Engine, Clean Mind
Now that you've relieved the "weight" on the engine and your motorcycle is breathing healthily again, you'll notice it responds better and vibrates less. It's like riding the motorcycle for the first time all over again.
But there's another type of "noise" that you also need to clear from your path: distraction.
Trying to read maps on a small, dim, and shaking cell phone on the handlebars is the visual equivalent of having a carbonized engine: inefficient and dangerous.
