Goodbye numb hands: How to change motorcycle grips in 15 minutes (stress-free)
Share
Look at your motorcycle grips. Is the rubber "glazed" and slippery? Or worse, is it crumbling and becoming "sticky" on your gloves when it's hot?
The grips are the main point of contact between you and the machine. Old grips cause hand fatigue, numbness, and insecurity when accelerating. Replacing the grips is probably the cheapest upgrade with the most immediate impact you can make. And the best part? You don't need to go to a repair shop.
Here's the foolproof guide to giving your motorcycle "new hands".
The Necessary Material
-
A pair of new grips (be careful with the size: 22mm for most, 25mm/1 inch for Harleys/Customs).
-
An X-Acto knife (bladed knife).
-
Alcohol or brake cleaner.
-
Hairspray (yes, you read that right) or wrist glue.
-
Cleaning cloth.
Step 1: The Removal (Without Mercy)
If you don't want to keep the old wristbands, the quickest way is to cut them off.
-
Run the X-Acto knife along the length of the grip (be careful not to scratch the handlebars or cut the plastic throttle tube under the rubber!).
-
Peel the old rubber like a banana.
-
Pro tip: If you have an air compressor, you can inject air between the rubber and the handlebars. The grip will "inflate" and come off on its own without cutting.
Step 2: Cleaning (Crucial)
The handlebars will be covered in old glue residue and dirt. Use alcohol or brake cleaner and a cloth to thoroughly clean and smooth the metal (on the left side) and the plastic throttle tube (on the right side). If old glue remains, the new grips will have bumps.
Step 3: Identify Left and Right
Careful here! The two handles have different inner diameters .
-
The larger hole is on the accelerator side (right) , because it has to fit over the rotating tube.
-
The smaller hole is for the Clutch (Left) side, which fits directly onto the metal.
Step 4: The Hairspray Trick
How do you make the handle go in easily and then not rotate? You can use specific glue, but the trick of "old school" mechanics is Extra Strong Hairspray .
-
Spray some hairspray inside the new grip and a little on the handlebars.
-
While the lacquer is wet, it acts as a lubricant. The handle will slide into place effortlessly.
-
Quickly adjust the position of the design/logo.
-
Let it dry for 10 to 20 minutes. When the lacquer dries, it becomes a powerful glue.
Step 5: The Security Test
Before starting the motorcycle, twist the throttle. It should rotate freely and return to its initial position on its own when you release it. If the handlebar grip is rubbing against the handlebar end counterweight or the control unit, you may be trapping the throttle open (which is very dangerous). If necessary, move it back one millimeter.
Pro Tip: New Hands, New Eyes
Now that your hands have renewed comfort and grip, you'll feel the motorcycle much more "yours." You've just made a tactile upgrade to your cockpit.
But a modern cockpit isn't just made of new rubber. It's made of information .
What good are comfortable wrists for a long trip if your eyes are straining to see a tiny map on your phone? Visual comfort is just as important as physical comfort in preventing fatigue.

Motoplay is the perfect visual complement to your new handlebars. While your hands control the motorcycle with precision, Motoplay's high-definition screen shows the road, curves, and traffic with total clarity.
Transform the handlebars into your complete command center.
