Engine Light On? Discover the Meaning of the 5 Most Common Dashboard Lights

You're in the middle of a road trip, enjoying the drive, and suddenly it happens: a yellow or red light comes on in your instrument panel.

My heart skips a beat. Panic sets in. Is it serious? Is the engine going to explode? Should I pull over immediately, or can I just drive home?

Modern motorcycles are complex machines full of sensors, and the dashboard is the only way they have to "talk" to you. Ignoring a warning can turn a €20 repair into a €1,000 bill (or leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere).

To save you the guesswork, we've demystified the 5 most common symbols and what you should do when they appear.

1. The Light of the Oil (The Red "Oil Can")

Severity: 🔴 CRITICAL (Stop Immediately)

This is the most dangerous warning light on the dashboard. If you see a red icon that looks like a dripping magic lamp (oil can), do not attempt to reach the nearest gas station. What it means: It usually indicates a lack of oil pressure , not just a low level. Without pressure, the oil doesn't reach the pistons and the engine can seize in seconds. What to do: Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and check the oil level. If there is oil, the pump is broken. Call a tow truck.

2. The Temperature Light (The Thermometer)

Severity: 🔴 CRITICAL (Stop as soon as possible)

It's usually a red thermometer dipped in waves. What it means: The engine is overheating. It could be a lack of coolant, a broken fan, or a stuck thermostat. What to do: Stop the motorcycle to let the engine cool down. Check (carefully so you don't burn yourself!) if the coolant level in the reservoir is low. Do not continue riding with this light on, or you could blow the head gasket.

3. Battery Light (The +/- Rectangle)

Severity: 🟠 MODERATE (Electrical Failure Warning)

What it means: Contrary to popular belief, this light doesn't mean the battery is old. It means the charging system (alternator/rectifier) isn't working . The motorcycle is consuming the remaining energy in the battery and not replenishing it. What to do: You have limited time. Turn off auxiliary lights or heated grips to save energy and go home or to a repair shop immediately. When the battery dies, the motorcycle will stop and won't start again.

4. The ABS Light (Circle with ABS lettering)

Gravity: 🟠 WARNING (System Disabled)

What it means: If this light flashes or stays on while you are riding (it's normal for it to be on before you start), it means the Anti-lock Braking System has failed or been switched off. What to do: Can you continue riding? Yes. The motorcycle continues to brake normally, but you don't have the protection of ABS . If you brake hard on wet or sandy pavement, the wheels will lock and you could fall. Exercise extra caution until the problem is resolved.

5. The Engine Light (Check Engine / Yellow Engine Symbol)

Gravity: 🟠 VARIABLE (Safety Mode)

What it means: The engine management system has detected an error in a sensor (lambda probe, injection, air intake, etc.). Often the motorcycle enters "Limp Mode" (loses power to protect itself). What to do: If the motorcycle is not making strange noises or emitting smoke, you can usually drive to the workshop calmly. It's a warning to turn on the diagnostic machine and check the error code.

Important Note: Visibility is Security

Many of these warning lights are small and difficult to see, especially on older motorcycle dashboards or in bright sunlight. Don't let a dull or scratched screen obscure vital information about your machine's health.

And speaking of visibility: how do you see your GPS?

If you're still trying to decipher maps on a small, vibrating cell phone, you're distracting yourself from what's essential: the motorcycle's dashboard and the road.

With Motoplay 's high-definition, high-brightness screen, you gain total clarity in your navigation. Motoplay allows you to have Waze and Spotify visible and accessible, freeing your attention to monitor the motorcycle's behavior and road hazards.

It improves your visibility on all fronts. You take care of the mechanics, and leave the navigation to us.
