Mota a "soluçar"? A culpa pode ser de uma peça de 5 Euros (Vela de Ignição)

Is your motorcycle "hiccuping"? The problem might be a 5 Euro part (spark plug).

It's a classic. You're driving along calmly and you feel the engine lose power. Or, in the morning, you press the start button and the motorcycle coughs and coughs, but refuses to start.

Often, we immediately think of the worst: a clogged fuel injection system, a broken fuel pump, or serious electrical problems. But, most of the time, the culprit is a small component that fits in the palm of your hand and costs less than a lunch: the spark plug.

This small part is responsible for creating the spark that ignites the fuel inside the engine. If it fails, the engine "dies." But how do you know if the spark plug is just old or if it's warning you of a bigger problem in the engine?

Here are the symptoms and how to make the diagnosis by color.

The 4 Classic Symptoms of a "Tired" Candle

Before disassembling your motorcycle, pay attention to these signs your machine gives you:

  1. Starting Difficulty: If the starter motor turns, but the engine takes a long time to start (or you need to try several times), the spark plug may be worn and the spark is too weak to initiate cold combustion.

  2. Motorcycle "Hiccups" (Ignition Misfires): Do you feel your motorcycle stuttering or jerking when you accelerate, especially uphill or when overtaking? That's the spark plug failing inside the cylinder.

  3. High Fuel Consumption: If the gasoline isn't burned properly, the engine needs to inject more fuel to maintain speed. A bad spark plug can drastically increase fuel consumption.

  4. Unstable Idle: When you stop at a traffic light, the engine speed fluctuates on its own, or the motorcycle stalls for no apparent reason.

Diagnosis by Color: What the Candle's "Face" Says

Removing the spark plug is easy (all you need is a spark plug wrench). The color of the tip (the electrode) tells the whole story about the health of your engine.

  • Light Brown (Café au Lait) Color:Healthy. This is the ideal color. It means the air/fuel mixture is perfect and the engine is running at the correct temperature.

  • Black and Dry (Carbonized) Color: ⚠️ Rich Mixture. This means that too much gasoline or too little air is entering. It could be due to a dirty air filter, mistuned injection, or too many short trips where the engine doesn't heat up enough to clean the spark plug.

  • White or with bubbles:DANGER (Lean mixture/Overheating). If the spark plug is pale white, the engine is running too hot or has a lack of fuel. Caution: this can melt the piston and quickly destroy the engine.

  • Black and Oily (Wet):DANGER (Oil in the Cylinder). If the spark plug comes out wet with black oil, you have a serious sealing problem (worn piston rings or valve seals). The engine is "drinking" oil.

When to Replace?

Don't wait for it to fail. Regular motorcycle spark plugs generally last between 10,000 and 20,000 km (check your manual), while Iridium spark plugs can last twice as long. It's an inexpensive maintenance task that restores the motorcycle's original power immediately.

Pro Tip: Spark in the Engine, Light on the Path

Now that you've ensured your engine's "spark" is strong and reliable, ask yourself: how is your navigation "spark"?

Having a well-tuned engine is of little use if you have to stop every 10 km to look at the map on your phone, or if you're distracted by a small, dark screen.

Just as a spark plug is essential for the engine to run smoothly, Motoplay is essential for your trip to flow without interruptions. Our high-definition screen ensures you never miss an exit, receive real-time traffic alerts, and control your music, all without taking your gloves off or your eyes off the road.

It keeps the mechanics up-to-date and the technology ahead of its time.
